Teaching Your Child to Follow Directions

Every parent and child has struggled with listening at some point in their relationships, and it can be one of the most frustrating things to go through for both parties. But there are ways to help reduce frustration on both sides while effectively teaching your child to not only listen the first time, but for them to want to listen the first time as well.

Here are a few things that parents can do as they are teaching their children that will help both of you through this growing pain.

Teaching Your Child to Follow Directions

Parents, Remain Calm

When it’s the fourth time you’ve told your kids something and they still won’t listen, it’s really easy to lose your cool out of your own frustration. So try adjusting your mindset and approach from the get-go next time.

Start out by calmly giving them a direction. Be patient but firm, and remember that teaching kids how to listen takes time. Patience will be your friend as you have to repeat these steps.

Parents, Be Direct

Make sure you are clear and concise with the directions you give your kids. If you aren’t, they may not be able to figure out how to execute each step of your instructions, which will cause confusion for both you and your child.

Instead of just saying, “Sit down,” say, “Can you please sit in that chair?” Giving clear, specific directions instead of general ones will help your kids and save your sanity in the long run.

Parents, Keep Directions Positive

Another thing to keep in mind is to keep your directions and commands on the positive end, meaning asking your kids what you WANT them to do or what they SHOULD be doing, not what they SHOULDN’T be doing.

Not to say that you shouldn’t say “No”, but try giving “Do” commands first instead.

Parents, Make Sure to Give One Command At a Time

Kids can get easily overwhelmed if they are given too many directions at once. So make sure to give them one command at a time in the right order. This will make it much easier for you and your kids on this journey to learning good listening skills.

How you handle teaching your child to follow directions can help them either grow in a really healthy way or cause them to develop really mentally and socially unhealthy behaviors. But if you can make sure you are diligently trying to teach with some of the suggestions we have made above, you can help your child succeed well in life by learning how to follow directions.

How Does Daycare Positively Affect Early Childhood Development?

A high-quality childcare center can have a really positive effect on children in their early childhood development years.

Here are some of the most impactful ways daycare centers can have a positive impact on young children.

How Does Daycare Positively Affect Early Childhood Development?

Daycare Centers Foster Healthy Communication Skills and Social/Emotional Behaviors

Daycare centers provide kids with many opportunities every day to interact with other kids and trusted adults, which gives them plenty of chances to develop their communication skills through observation and practice.

It also teaches kids how to create meaningful relationships outside of their families with their friends and trusted caregivers, which helps build their communication skills.

Enrollment at a high-quality daycare center can have a profound and lasting role in a child’s social and emotional development. Kids also have the opportunity to work through tougher social or emotional situations with the help of caregivers around them who can help teach them critical skills of empathy and open communication.

A daycare setting provides many consistent opportunities for children to develop empathy, resilience, and positive social behaviors that will serve them well as they continue to grow.

Daycare Centers Can Help Cultivate Confidence

Children will gain a healthy sense of confidence in a quality childcare center as well.

Daycare centers offer all sorts of new experiences and activities for kids to work through–when they start doing this consistently and successfully, they start to learn that they can do new and hard things if they put their mind to it and put the work in.

This helps them as they get older and work on setting goals for themselves and accomplishing the things they set out to do.

Daycare Centers Support School Readiness

Children will have the opportunity in a daycare center to learn at age-appropriate levels that will keep them on track with where they should be developmentally and help them be prepared for school when the time comes.

Caregivers can also help establish a solid educational foundation with the one-on-one attention they can give to each child because of smaller class sizes. This will foster not only effective learning but hopefully a love for learning and school as well.

What Impact Does Daycare Have on Early Childhood Development?

Parents who are new to the daycare scene often wonder what kind of impact a good daycare center can truly have on their child’s early childhood development. Can the impact be that much different from what their son or daughter could experience at home or in an in-home childcare setting?

Here are some of the biggest positive impacts that a quality daycare center can have on early childhood development.

What Impact Does Daycare Have on Early Childhood Development?

Promotes Educational Development

High-quality childcare centers offer unique educational programs and activities that can promote educational development in a child.

Age-appropriate curriculums, hands-on activities, and field trips or extracurricular educational experiences all lend to building a solid foundation of knowledge as well as help develop a love of learning that children will carry with them as they continue to grow.

Grows a Child’s Competence and Confidence

The new learning experiences kids get to work through in daycare can help them develop their level of competence and their sense of confidence.

Getting the chance to learn and master new skills helps children realize that taking on new challenges doesn’t have to be scary and gives them the confidence they need to approach learning with an open mind and willingness to learn.

They will take this skill into their future goals and challenges as they grow as well.

Healthy Communication Skills

Daycare settings provide many opportunities for kids to hone and practice their communication skills, both with other kids as well as with their caregivers.

When little kids are put into different situations together, there are always going to be opportunities to learn and grow together when it comes to healthy communication. Whether it comes out of learning how to share, communicating their feelings, practicing manners, or solving problems as a group, kids have many opportunities to better master their communication skills in age-appropriate ways.

Caregivers can help in this process while also developing another side of the child’s communication skills: communicating with adults. When children are able to learn how to talk with, seek help from, and build a meaningful relationship with a trusted adult, their communication skills as well as their confidence begin to grow.

Positive Social Behavior

Developing their communication skills will lead kids into learning positive social behaviors as well.

Navigating the murky waters of social and emotional settings can be tough; but when trained caregivers are able to help a child work through situations with their friends that the kids may not encounter at home, it allows the children to experience a different level of growth and development in their social behaviors.

In a quality daycare setting, you will find consistent opportunities for children to develop a sense of empathy, resilience, and positive social behaviors that they will continue to use throughout their life.
